On January 19, 2025, I pulled my daily tarot card from the Celestial Tarot deck, asking what message it had for me. The card I drew was the Five of Cups, a card often associated with loss, disappointment, and emotional setbacks. At the time, I wasn’t sure what it could mean for my day – but in hindsight, it all became clear.

That same day, the Detroit Lions, who fought hard all season to earn the coveted #1 seed, were gearing up for their first playoff game. They’d earned a bye in the first round, a huge accomplishment that filled fans like me with hope. Could this finally be their year? After all, the Lions have never won a Super Bowl, and while they’ve made it to the playoffs before, they’ve never gotten very far.

But then came the heartbreak. Despite their stellar season and high seeding, the Lions lost their second-round playoff game. Just like that, their Super Bowl dreams were over. I was crushed, but as I reflected on the Five of Cups, I realized the cards had prepared me for this moment.

The symbolism of the spilled cups perfectly captured the disappointment of the loss – the dashed hopes of Lions fans everywhere. But the two upright cups in the card reminded me not to dwell entirely on the negative. There’s still so much to celebrate: the Lions had an incredible season, made it further than many expected, and showed us all why we continue to root for them.

It’s fascinating to think about how tarot can offer guidance or even a warning. The Five of Cups didn’t change the outcome, but it helped me re-frame the experience. I wasn’t as devastated as I might have been otherwise, and I was able to see the bigger picture.

This moment reminded me why I love tarot – it’s not just about predicting the future but about gaining insight and perspective. The Lions may not have won, but they’ve made progress, and I’ll keep cheering for them. After all, those two upright cups are still standing, and so is my hope for next season.
