There’s something different about coffee on October 1st.
Technically, it’s the same coffee I could have made yesterday. Same kitchen. Same morning routine. Same mug sitting in my hands.
But today?
It feels a little more magical.
October has always had a way of doing that to me. The decorations are glowing, there’s a tiny skeleton hanging out beside my coffee, and suddenly an ordinary morning feels like something worth slowing down for.
Maybe that’s part of why I wanted to do this challenge.
For the next 31 days, I’m challenging myself to take one photo every day inspired by a different prompt—but I don’t want to stop at the photograph.
I want to write about it, too.
Not because every picture has some profound story behind it.
Some probably won’t.
But I think there’s something beautiful about paying enough attention to ordinary life to look for one.
And Day 1 couldn’t have started with a more appropriate subject for me:
Coffee.
My Morning Coffee Ritual
My coffee ritual actually starts the night before.
I preset the coffee maker so that when I come downstairs in the morning, the coffee is already made and waiting for me. And I have to say—walking downstairs to fresh coffee that Past Lex already took care of is one of life’s tiny victories.
Then comes the fun part.
I grab whatever cozy mug I’m feeling that morning and add a splash of French vanilla creamer, a pump of lavender syrup, and a little dash of cinnamon.
I pour my coffee about halfway up the mug, and then I grab one of my favorite little kitchen gadgets: my coffee frother.
I have an old roommate to thank for introducing me to frothers, because once she did, there was no going back.
I froth everything together until it’s creamy and foamy, then fill the rest of my mug with coffee.
Does frothing it actually make the coffee taste better?
I don’t know.
But in my completely unofficial coffee-drinking opinion, YES.
Something about that little layer of foam makes my homemade coffee feel like something I ordered from a cute café instead of something I made half-awake in my kitchen.
And considering how much cheaper it is to make it at home? Even better.

Once my coffee is ready, I sit down with my husband, we turn on the news, and I sip my ridiculously fancy-feeling homemade coffee while we start our morning together.
And honestly?
That’s the part I love most.
The coffee is delicious. I love choosing a mug. I love my little frother probably more than a person reasonably should.
But the ritual itself is what makes it special.
It’s familiar.
It’s warm.
It’s a few quiet minutes together before the day really begins.
Finding Magic in the Ordinary
Maybe that’s what I want this October challenge to be about.
Not creating 31 perfect photographs.
Not writing 31 perfect stories.
Just paying attention.
Finding something interesting in the ordinary.
Looking for the cozy, weird, beautiful, funny, spooky, and magical little moments that I might normally walk right past.
Today, that moment happened to be a cup of coffee.
Well…
A cup of coffee, a glowing RIP pumpkin, and a tiny skeleton casually relaxing beside me.

Because obviously.
And if October wants to sprinkle a little extra magic on top of an ordinary morning?
Even better.
Day 1 of 31: Coffee.

One photo down.
One story written.
And an entire October still waiting to be noticed.
