Day 3 of my 31 Days of October Photo + Writing Challenge
They’re just a pair of sneakers sitting beside my front door.
A little worn. A little dusty. Nothing fancy.
If you walked into my house, you probably wouldn’t give them a second glance. You’d step past them, maybe notice the little ghost mat beside them, and keep going.
But today’s photo prompt was “your shoes,” and when I stopped long enough to actually look at mine, I realized something:
Those shoes have stories to tell.
They’ve carried me farther than I give them credit for.
A Little Bit of Magic in Every Step
These shoes have walked with me through Fort Bragg, where the California coast feels wild and beautiful and the salty ocean air somehow makes everything feel a little lighter.
They’ve taken me to Point Arena Lighthouse, standing tall against that seemingly endless stretch of blue. There’s something about lighthouses that has always felt magical to me. Their history. Their mystery. I just love the idea of a light continuing to shine through fog, storms, darkness, and everything else the ocean throws its way.
And these shoes were there with me.
They’ve also experienced a completely different kind of magic.
Disneyland magic.
They’ve survived the miles of walking that somehow don’t seem quite as exhausting when there’s a castle waiting around the corner. They’ve wandered through crowds, stood in lines, chased rides, and carried me through those wonderfully long Disney days when your feet are begging you to sit down—but some part of you still wants to squeeze in just one more thing.
And then there are the trails.
These shoes have wandered across California with me, one hike at a time.
They’ve stepped over dirt and rocks, climbed hills, followed winding paths and carried me toward waterfalls, overlooks, wildlife, and views that photographs never quite seem able to capture.
Somewhere along the way, they’ve collected a little California dust.
I think I like that.
We Rarely Notice What Carries Us There
The funny thing is, when we make memories, we rarely think about our shoes.
We remember the destination.
We photograph the lighthouse.
We stop for the ocean.
We take pictures of the castle.
We pull out our phones when the sunset looks particularly beautiful or when we finally reach the view at the end of a trail.
We remember who was standing beside us, what made us laugh, what we ate, what went wrong, and the tiny unexpected moments that somehow become our favorite parts of the story.
Our shoes?
They’re just… there.
Quietly carrying us through all of it.
Maybe there’s something kind of beautiful about that.
Because life isn’t only made up of the giant moments we circle on calendars or plan months in advance.
Sometimes life is simply putting on your shoes and walking out the door.
You don’t always know which ordinary day will become a memory.
So… Where Do I Want My Feet to Take Me Next?
Everywhere.
Okay, maybe that’s slightly ambitious.
But I want more.
More California trails where I don’t know exactly what’s waiting around the bend.
More lighthouses perched along rugged coastlines.
More historic towns with old buildings and stories hiding behind their walls.
More haunted places where the history is just spooky enough to make me wonder whether everyone who once walked those halls actually left.
More little towns I’ve never heard of.
More local restaurants discovered because someone said, “You HAVE to eat here.”
More waterfalls.
More ocean views.
More sunsets that make me stop walking for a minute just to stare.
And yes, absolutely more Disneyland days.
But maybe the places I’m most excited about are the ones I don’t know about yet.
There are destinations I haven’t discovered.
Trails I haven’t found.
Restaurants I haven’t tasted.
Stories I haven’t heard.
Photographs I haven’t taken.
Memories I haven’t made.
Somewhere out there is a place that will someday become one of my favorite memories—and right now, I don’t even know it exists.
There’s something wonderfully magical about that.
Maybe That’s What These Shoes Really Represent
When I took today’s picture, I thought I was photographing a pair of sneakers.
Instead, I think I accidentally photographed a tiny piece of my life.
They aren’t perfectly clean.
They aren’t posed against some breathtaking California backdrop.
They’re sitting beside my front door.
Waiting.
And maybe that’s my favorite part of the picture.
Because adventures don’t always begin somewhere extraordinary.
Sometimes they begin right here.
At home.
With a pair of shoes by the door and absolutely no idea where they’ll carry you next.
For now, mine are resting.
But hopefully not for long.
There are still too many places I haven’t seen, too many trails I haven’t walked, too many mysterious old buildings I haven’t explored, and far too many stories waiting somewhere down the road.
So I guess I’ll just have to lace them up…
and see where they take me next.
