Today’s Photo Prompt: Your Favorite Place

Today’s Writing Prompt: What’s a place that makes you feel completely like yourself?

Home will always have a special place in my heart. It’s where I’m comfortable, where I can relax, and where I can completely be myself.

But if we’re talking about places outside of home that have captured my heart, two immediately come to mind.

Hearst Castle and Preston Castle.

Two very different places. Two very different experiences. Yet somehow, both speak to different parts of who I am.

Hearst Castle: A Place That Feels Like Magic ✨

There is something absolutely breathtaking about Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California.

The architecture. The landscaping. The incredible views. The attention to detail.

EVERYTHING.

It’s one of those places where photographs simply cannot capture how magnificent it feels to stand there in person.

I love places that tell stories, and Hearst Castle has so many of them.

Walking through the property, I find myself imagining what life must have been like when the estate was filled with guests, conversations, laughter, and extravagant gatherings.

Every room feels like a piece of history.

Every architectural detail feels intentional.

And the views? Absolutely magical.

I could spend hours admiring the beauty of it all.

There’s something about visiting a place so extraordinary that makes the dreamer in me come alive.

Preston Castle: Where History, Mystery, and Emotion Meet 👻

Then there’s Preston Castle in Ione, California.

If Hearst Castle captures my imagination through beauty, Preston Castle captures my attention through its haunting history.

I’ve always been fascinated by historic buildings, especially those with darker stories.

And Preston Castle certainly has its share.

Originally built as a reform school for boys, the castle holds a complicated and sometimes heartbreaking history.

It’s beautiful in its own way, but there’s also something incredibly somber about it.

I’ve had the opportunity to participate in a paranormal investigation there, and it was an experience that stayed with me.

Not simply because of the unexplained moments, but because of the emotions I felt while exploring the building.

I felt connected to the place.

And sometimes I wonder if that connection has something to do with my own experiences with sadness.

Sometimes Sadness Feels Familiar

I think this is something worth talking about.

I have moments when I get into my own head. Moments when sadness creeps in, sometimes without any particular reason I can easily explain.

I think many of us experience that from time to time.

And because I know what those feelings are like, I sometimes find myself especially sensitive to places with painful histories.

When I walk through somewhere like Preston Castle, knowing that people experienced hardship within those walls, I feel a certain heaviness.

I’m not saying I know exactly what happened there simply because I feel something.

But I do know that learning about the suffering of others affects me deeply.

Maybe it’s empathy.

Maybe it’s my imagination.

Maybe it’s my fascination with the paranormal.

Or maybe it’s a combination of all three.

Whatever the explanation, Preston Castle is one of those places that has left a lasting impression on me.

Two Castles, Two Different Sides of Me

The more I think about my choices, the more they make sense.

Hearst Castle appeals to the part of me that loves beauty, creativity, architecture, and the extraordinary.

Preston Castle appeals to the part of me that’s fascinated by history, the unexplained, and the stories that don’t always have happy endings.

One makes me feel like I’m walking through a dream.

The other makes me feel like I’m walking through a mystery.

And I love them both.

Maybe that’s what makes a favorite place so special.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be somewhere peaceful or somewhere you visit all the time.

Sometimes it’s somewhere that awakens your curiosity.

Sometimes it’s somewhere that makes you feel something you can’t quite explain.

And sometimes it’s a place that reminds you just how many stories exist beyond your own.

For me, the places I love most aren’t just beautiful places. They’re places that make me feel, wonder, imagine, and connect.

And perhaps that’s why I’ll always be drawn to castles, historic buildings, and places with stories waiting to be discovered.

A little beauty. A little darkness. A little magic.

That’s pretty much me. 🖤

Your Turn!

What’s a place that makes you feel completely like yourself?

Is it somewhere peaceful and beautiful? Somewhere filled with memories? Or perhaps somewhere mysterious that you can’t quite explain your connection to?

I’d love to hear about it.

Until next time, keep exploring, keep wondering, and never stop finding magic in unexpected places.
