31 Days of October: A Photo + Writing Challenge

Today’s Photo Prompt: Spooky House

Today’s Writing Prompt: Tell about a haunted place you’ve visited — or one you’d love to investigate.

If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I absolutely LOVE a good haunted location.

Give me an old building with a mysterious past, a little paranormal activity, and centuries of stories waiting to be uncovered, and I’m interested!

I’ve always been fascinated by the paranormal, but it’s not necessarily about wanting to be scared. It’s about the history, the people who once lived there, and the possibility that something from the past might still be lingering.

And so far, my favorite haunted location I’ve visited is Preston Castle in Ione, California.

🏰 Preston Castle: My Favorite Haunted Experience

Preston Castle is one of those places that captures your attention before you even step inside.

Originally built as the Preston School of Industry, the castle opened in 1894 as a reform school for boys. Its history is fascinating, heartbreaking, and filled with stories that make you wonder what those walls have witnessed.

I’ve had the opportunity to participate in a paranormal investigation there, and it was an experience I won’t soon forget.

During our investigation, we explored areas of the castle, including the basement classroom. There were moments that made me question what was happening around us.

I experienced what felt like someone tugging on my backpack, unexplained sensations, and sounds that made me stop and listen.

Were they paranormal? I can’t say with absolute certainty.

But I can tell you that being inside a historic building like Preston Castle, knowing its past and experiencing those moments firsthand, is something that stays with you.

What draws me to places like Preston Castle isn’t just the possibility of ghosts.

It’s the history.

It’s imagining the people who walked those hallways long before I ever did.

It’s wondering how much of their stories have been forgotten.

And maybe, just maybe, whether some of those stories are still waiting to be told.

🌲 My Paranormal Bucket List: Aokigahara Forest, Japan

Now, there’s another location that I’ve wanted to visit for quite some time.

Aokigahara Forest in Japan, sometimes referred to as the Sea of Trees.

Located near Mount Fuji, this forest is known for its dense vegetation, unusual quietness, and the folklore and legends surrounding it.

It’s also gained a reputation as one of the world’s most unsettling forests.

Some Japanese folklore associates forests and remote places with spirits, and Aokigahara has become the subject of countless paranormal stories and urban legends.

But there’s also a very real and tragic side to its reputation, as the forest has been associated with suicide.

I think it’s important to approach a location like this with compassion and respect, rather than treating real human suffering as entertainment.

What interests me is the combination of its natural beauty, cultural history, folklore, and mysterious atmosphere.

I would love to visit someday, experience its peaceful trails, learn more about its history, and appreciate the place for what it truly is.

Of course, Japan is a long way from California, so this particular adventure might have to stay on my bucket list for a while!

But a girl can dream, right?

🖤 Why Haunted Places Fascinate Me

I’ve always believed that history is more than dates, buildings, and names in textbooks.

It’s people.

It’s emotions.

It’s lives that were once just as complicated, beautiful, and heartbreaking as our own.

When I visit a historic location, especially one with a darker past, I find myself thinking about the people who were there before me.

What were their dreams? What were their fears? Were they happy? Were they lonely?

Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to haunted places.

Because beneath every ghost story, there’s usually a human story.

And those are the stories I find most fascinating.

✨ A Little October Magic

For now, Preston Castle remains my favorite haunted location I’ve experienced.

But I know there are so many more mysterious places waiting to be explored, both close to home and around the world.

Some adventures are about beautiful views and relaxing vacations.

Others are about stepping into history, embracing the unknown, and allowing yourself to wonder about the things we can’t always explain.

And I happen to love a little bit of both.

Now I’m curious: What’s the most haunted place you’ve ever visited? And if you could investigate any mysterious location in the world, where would you go?

Until the next adventure, keep finding magic in the mysterious.
