Which book’s world would be the absolute worst to live in?

I’ve always loved getting lost in a good story. Books, movies, fictional worlds… there’s something magical about escaping reality for a little while.
But some fictional worlds? You couldn’t PAY me to live in them.
When I saw today’s writing prompt, two stories immediately came to mind: The Maze Runner and World War Z.
Now, full disclosure: I’ve only watched the movie adaptations, not read the books. But considering both originated as novels, I think they still deserve a spot in this conversation!
And after thinking about it, I have to give the award for the absolute WORST fictional world to live in to…
World War Z.
First of All, Those Zombies Are FAST!
Listen, I’ve watched enough scary movies to know that a zombie apocalypse is not something I want to experience.
Especially the zombies in World War Z!
These aren’t your typical slow-moving, stumbling-around-the-neighborhood zombies.
Oh, no.
These things RUN. They climb. They swarm. They’re practically launching themselves at people!
Absolutely not.
I enjoy going for walks and hikes, but I would prefer my cardio to be voluntary, thank you very much.
My Zombie Apocalypse Survival Plan
Some people probably imagine themselves grabbing weapons, jumping into a vehicle, and fighting their way through the apocalypse.
Me?
I’m staying HOME.
I’m locking the doors, closing the blinds, gathering supplies, and doing everything I possibly can to keep my family safe.
I’d want to make sure we had food, clean water, medications, and anything else we might need to survive without leaving the house.
I’d be helping provide, organize, and protect as best as I could.
Would I be terrified? Absolutely.
Would I probably be checking every window and jumping at every strange noise? You bet.
But I’d rather be hiding somewhere safe with the people I love than running down the street with a hundred zombies chasing me.
The Scariest Part Might Not Even Be the Zombies
Here’s where this fictional world gets genuinely disturbing.
Imagine watching everything you’ve ever known disappear almost overnight.
No grocery stores. No normal routines. No guarantee that help is coming.
And what happens when people become desperate?
Would neighbors help one another? Would strangers share supplies? Or would fear turn ordinary people against each other?
That’s the part that really makes me think.
Because sometimes the scariest thing about an apocalyptic story isn’t the monster.
It’s what happens to humanity when survival becomes more important than compassion.
No Thanks, I’ll Stay in This World
I love a good scary movie. I love suspense, mysteries, and stories that make me question what I would do in an impossible situation.
But there’s a HUGE difference between enjoying a zombie apocalypse from the comfort of my couch and actually living through one.
I enjoy my morning coffee, peaceful walks, cozy evenings at home, and knowing my loved ones are safe.
I don’t need zombies pounding on the front door to make life more interesting.
So, while The Maze Runner would certainly be a nightmare, World War Z takes the crown for me.
I’ll happily leave the zombie fighting to the fictional heroes.
I’ll be inside, guarding the snacks and making sure everyone has enough water.
Your Turn!
If you had to survive a zombie apocalypse, would you be out fighting zombies, searching for other survivors, or hiding somewhere safe with your family?
And more importantly… do you think you’d survive?
Until next time, keep your imagination wild and your doors locked!
