31 Days of October: A Photo + Writing Challenge
Have you ever smelled something and suddenly felt like you were somewhere else?
Maybe it reminded you of a person, a place, a holiday, or a moment in your life that you hadn’t thought about in years.
I think one of the most magical things about our senses is how something as simple as a smell can bring a memory rushing back.
And for me, candles do exactly that.
Vanilla Candles — A Little Reminder of My Mom
Vanilla candles will always remind me of my mom.
There’s something about that warm, sweet, comforting scent that brings her to mind. It’s familiar. It’s cozy. And even though it’s such a simple fragrance, it holds something special for me.
It’s funny how certain scents become connected to people we love.
Sometimes, when we lose someone, we find little pieces of them in the most unexpected places. A song on the radio. A favorite movie. A familiar recipe.
Or even a candle.
I love that something as ordinary as vanilla can remind me of someone so important in my life.
Disney Candles — A Little Vacation in a Jar

Have you ever seen those candles that are made to smell like Disney attractions, resorts, or even certain areas of the parks?
I think they’re such a fun idea!
There’s something so fascinating about recreating the scents of places we’ve visited.
Disneyland and Disney World are filled with experiences that engage all of your senses. The sights, sounds, food, atmosphere, and yes, even the smells!
Being able to light a candle at home that reminds you of a favorite attraction or resort is such a fun way to revisit those memories without actually going anywhere.
It’s like taking a tiny vacation from your living room.
And who wouldn’t love that?
Pumpkin Candles — The Magic of Halloween
If there’s one scent that instantly makes me think of October, it’s pumpkin.
Pumpkin spice, pumpkin pie, warm cinnamon, and all those delicious autumn fragrances.
They remind me of Halloween, fall decorations, cozy evenings, and everything I love about this time of year.
There’s just something about lighting a pumpkin candle while surrounded by autumn decorations that makes the whole house feel magical.
It’s almost as if the season has officially arrived the moment that first candle is lit.
Evergreen Candles — Christmas in the Air
And then there’s Christmas.
Evergreen, pine, and fresh Christmas tree scents instantly remind me of the holidays.
There’s something so comforting about that fresh, woodsy fragrance.
It makes me think of decorated Christmas trees, twinkling lights, holiday traditions, and the excitement that comes with the season.
Even if you don’t have a real Christmas tree, lighting an evergreen candle can make your home feel like you do.
It’s amazing how quickly a fragrance can change the atmosphere of a room.
The Memories We Can’t See
I think that’s what I love most about candles.
Of course, I enjoy decorating my home and making it feel cozy, but candles bring something extra to the experience.
They create an atmosphere.
They help tell a story.
And sometimes, they remind us of chapters of our lives that we wish we could visit just one more time.
A vanilla candle reminds me of my mom.
A Disney-inspired candle can bring back the excitement of a magical vacation.
Pumpkin reminds me of Halloween.
And evergreen brings Christmas memories rushing back.
Different scents. Different memories. Different emotions.
All from something as simple as lighting a candle.
Maybe that’s why I love them so much. Because sometimes, a scent isn’t just a scent. It’s a memory waiting to be remembered.
Your Turn!
Is there a particular scent that instantly takes you back to a certain person, place, or moment in your life?
Maybe it’s your grandmother’s perfume, fresh-baked cookies, the ocean air, or a candle that reminds you of home.
I’d love to know!
Until next time, keep finding the magic in the everyday.
