My Worst Travel Experience: The Waterfall in Jamaica We Never Even Got to See

Sometimes the worst travel experiences make the best stories. Unfortunately, this one happened on our honeymoon.

When you think about a honeymoon in Jamaica, you probably imagine beautiful beaches, tropical drinks, breathtaking waterfalls, and unforgettable adventures.

You probably don’t imagine getting pressured into buying wooden souvenirs, feeling completely overwhelmed by people trying to get your money, and calling your resort to come rescue you before you’ve even seen the attraction you came for.

But that’s exactly what happened to us.

Our Jamaican Honeymoon

In April 2026, my husband Tony and I traveled to Jamaica for our honeymoon and first wedding anniversary.

We stayed at the beautiful Sandals Ochi resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It was supposed to be a romantic getaway filled with relaxation, exploring, and making memories together.

And don’t get me wrong, Jamaica was beautiful!

We wanted to experience more than just the resort, though. When you’re visiting another country, there’s something exciting about getting out, exploring the area, and seeing the places that make that destination special.

One of those places was the famous Dunn’s River Falls.

If you’ve ever looked up things to do in Ocho Rios, you’ve probably seen pictures of this incredible waterfall. People climb the cascading rocks, splash around in the water, and take beautiful vacation photos.

Naturally, we wanted to experience it ourselves.

Unfortunately, our experience went in a completely different direction.

The Moment We Walked Through the Gate

We were dropped off at Dunn’s River Falls, excited to see what everyone was talking about.

We made it through the entrance gate.

And that’s about as far as our enjoyable experience went.

Almost immediately, we found ourselves surrounded by people trying to sell us things.

Handmade wooden trinkets, souvenirs, and other items from local vendors.

Now, I have absolutely nothing against supporting local artists or purchasing handmade souvenirs. In fact, I love finding unique items when I travel!

But there’s a difference between browsing a market because you want to and feeling pressured into buying something when you’re simply trying to enjoy an attraction.

We ended up getting talked into purchasing wooden trinkets that we hadn’t even planned on buying.

And it didn’t stop there.

It felt like everywhere we turned, someone else wanted us to spend money.

Instead of enjoying the scenery, learning about the waterfall, or simply taking in the experience, we were constantly dealing with another sales pitch.

It became exhausting.

We Never Even Saw the Waterfall!

Here’s the part that still gets me.

We went to Dunn’s River Falls and never actually saw Dunn’s River Falls.

Not a single waterfall photo.

No climbing the rocks.

No beautiful honeymoon moment standing together beneath the cascading water.

Nothing.

We had traveled all the way to Jamaica, made the effort to visit this famous attraction, and somehow the entire experience became about avoiding people trying to sell us something.

Eventually, we had enough.

Rather than continue feeling uncomfortable and frustrated, we contacted our resort and asked to be picked up early.

Yes. We literally called to leave.

Our waterfall adventure was officially over before it had even begun.

Looking Back, It’s Almost Funny

At the time, I was frustrated.

We weren’t there to shop. We weren’t there to spend our entire excursion saying no to people.

We were there to experience something beautiful together.

And instead, we left with wooden souvenirs and a story about the waterfall we never saw.

Now, looking back, I can almost laugh about it.

Almost.

Because seriously, how do you visit one of Jamaica’s most famous waterfalls and manage to leave without seeing the actual waterfall?!

Apparently, if you’re us, it’s entirely possible.

Would I Ever Go Back?

I wouldn’t rule it out.

One disappointing excursion doesn’t define an entire country, and I know plenty of travelers have had incredible experiences at Dunn’s River Falls.

I also understand that tourism is an important source of income for local vendors and their families.

But as a visitor, I believe there’s a balance between offering someone a product and making them feel pressured to purchase it.

For me, the constant selling overshadowed everything else.

If I ever returned, I’d want to research the experience more carefully, understand where the vendors are located, and make sure we could actually enjoy the attraction we came to see.

Because I’d still love to see that waterfall someday!

The Travel Lesson I Took Away

Travel isn’t always picture-perfect.

Sometimes the excursion you’ve been looking forward to becomes the one you wish you’d skipped.

Sometimes the memories you make aren’t the ones you expected.

And sometimes you have to recognize when an experience isn’t enjoyable anymore and give yourself permission to walk away.

That’s exactly what we did.

We didn’t force ourselves to stay simply because we had already made the trip.

We chose to leave and enjoy the rest of our honeymoon.

My biggest takeaway? Don’t let the pressure to spend money ruin the experiences you actually traveled to enjoy.

And if something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to change your plans.

At least Tony and I came home with a honeymoon story we’ll probably never forget.

Even if we never actually saw the waterfall.

Have you ever traveled somewhere famous only to have the experience turn into a complete disappointment? I’d love to hear your worst travel story in the comments!
