Have you ever accomplished something you were genuinely proud of… celebrated for approximately 12 seconds… and then immediately started thinking about everything you STILL haven’t done?
Because SAME.
You reach one goal.
And instead of stopping for a minute and saying:
LOOK WHAT I DID!
your brain immediately goes:
Okay… what’s next?
What still needs fixing?
Why am I not further along?
Why is that person already doing better than me?
And suddenly the accomplishment you were excited about five minutes ago doesn’t feel quite as impressive anymore.
Welcome back to LexTalk Tarot: One Card at a Time!

We’ve officially reached Card #20 in my journey through all 78 tarot cards!
And today’s card feels like the perfect reminder to STOP for a second and actually look at what we’ve already built.
Today’s card is…
THE NINE OF PENTACLES
At first glance, this card looks pretty luxurious.
There’s an elegantly dressed woman standing in a gorgeous vineyard.
Golden pentacles surround her.
There are grapes everywhere.
There’s a beautiful bird perched on her hand.
There’s an estate in the background.
She’s basically giving:
I have my life together.
But the more I studied this card, the more I realized that the Nine of Pentacles isn’t simply about having money.
It’s about cultivation.
Discipline.
Independence.
Confidence.
Personal accomplishments.
And actually allowing ourselves to ENJOY some of what we’ve worked so hard to create.
Because what is the point of constantly building a better life… if we never stop long enough to notice that it’s getting better?
Let’s explore.
Meet the Nine of Pentacles
Card: Nine of Pentacles
Suit: Pentacles
Arcana: Minor Arcana
Element: Earth
Number: Nine
Core Themes: Independence, self-sufficiency, accomplishment, comfort, discipline, confidence, abundance, and enjoying the fruits of your labor
The Suit of Pentacles traditionally connects with the physical and practical parts of life:
Money • Career • Home • Resources • Security • Health • Material Life
But I don’t want to reduce Pentacles to:
MONEY MONEY MONEY.
Because they’re so much more interesting than that.
Pentacles can represent the things we build in the physical world.
Our homes.
Our careers.
Our businesses.
Our skills.
Our routines.
Our resources.
The things that require actual effort and maintenance.
And today’s card feels like the moment when we finally look around and realize:
Wait…
I’ve actually built something here.
For my beginner tarot brain, I’m remembering this card like this:
Nine of Pentacles = Appreciate the life you’re building, one accomplishment at a time.
Let’s Study the Nine of Pentacles
This is another card where the artwork tells us SO much.
And there’s one teeny-tiny detail that I absolutely LOVE.
But we’ll get there.

First… let’s meet the woman standing in the middle of all those pentacles.
The Woman
The central figure stands alone.
And that’s important.
But she doesn’t look abandoned.
She doesn’t appear lonely.
She looks… comfortable. Confident. Composed.
She’s standing in a beautiful environment surrounded by things that have clearly been cultivated and cared for.
This is why the Nine of Pentacles is often associated with:
Independence • Self-reliance • Confidence • Personal accomplishment
And I think there’s an important distinction here.
Being independent doesn’t mean:
I DON’T NEED ANYBODY!
Humans need people.
We need relationships.
Community.
Connection.
Support.
But healthy independence can mean knowing that your identity and worth don’t completely depend on someone else.
Woman = Independence, confidence, and enjoying personal accomplishments.
The Grapevines
Look at everything growing around her.
GRAPES.
A LOT of grapes.
Grapevines can symbolize:
Abundance • Harvest • Enjoyment • Fertility • The fruits of labor
But here’s the part I really like.
A vineyard doesn’t happen overnight.
You don’t plant something today and wake up tomorrow surrounded by a giant harvest.
It takes time.
Care.
Maintenance.
Patience.
And THAT makes the vineyard such a perfect symbol for this card.
Because most meaningful accomplishments work the same way.
Grapevines = The results of patience, care, and sustained effort.
The Nine Pentacles
Obviously… we need to talk about the PENTACLES.
Nine golden pentacles appear throughout the vineyard.
They’re traditionally connected with:
Resources • Material stability • Accomplishment • Prosperity • Practical success
And yes, this card CAN have financial associations.
But I don’t think we should automatically interpret it as:
YOU’RE ABOUT TO BE RICH!!!
That’s not how I’m learning tarot.
Instead, I see the pentacles as evidence of something that has been cultivated.
Something has been built.
Something has grown.
Something exists now because effort was invested in it.
Nine Pentacles = The tangible results of your effort.
The Falcon
Okay.
THIS detail is cool.
The woman holds a hooded bird of prey—often described as a falcon—on her gloved hand.
And that can symbolize:
Discipline • Focus • Refinement • Self-control • Training
Because a trained falcon doesn’t simply happen.
There’s patience involved.
Consistency.
Trust.
Practice.
And that adds another layer to this card.
Sometimes we think success comes from motivation.
But motivation disappears.
Discipline is what helps us continue when something isn’t exciting anymore.
Falcon = Discipline and focused effort.
THE TINY SNAIL
Okay.
Can we please appreciate the fact that there is a tiny little snail crawling across the bottom of this card?
Because once I noticed him… I loved this card even more.
The snail isn’t necessarily one of tarot’s universally fixed symbols with one single official meaning, but it can make a wonderful memory aid for this card.
Because what do snails do?
They move.
VERY.
VERY.
SLOWLY.
But they’re still moving.
And I think that fits the Nine of Pentacles beautifully.
Because sometimes progress is slow.
Painfully slow.
Annoyingly slow.
IS ANYTHING EVEN HAPPENING?!
But slow progress is still progress.
And sometimes the things we’re most proud of later are the things that took the longest to build.
Snail = Slow progress still counts.
I am NEVER forgetting that little guy now.
The Estate in the Distance
There’s also a building or estate visible in the background.
It contributes to the overall feeling of stability and comfort.
The scene feels established.
Cultivated.
Secure.
Again… that doesn’t mean the Nine of Pentacles guarantees you’re about to buy a mansion.
Instead, it reinforces the theme of creating something stable in the physical world.
Estate = Stability, security, and something established over time.
Nine of Pentacles Upright Meaning
When the Nine of Pentacles appears upright, common interpretations include:
Independence • Self-sufficiency • Accomplishment • Confidence • Discipline • Comfort • Enjoyment • Personal success
And one of the biggest messages I’m taking from this card is:
You don’t have to reach your final destination before you’re allowed to appreciate how far you’ve come.
Maybe you’re not finished.
Maybe you’re nowhere NEAR finished.
Maybe you have huge goals.
Maybe there’s still so much you want to accomplish.
Great!
Keep going.
But don’t make the mistake of believing:
I’m not there yet = I’ve accomplished nothing.
Those are NOT the same thing.
Upright Message:
Stop occasionally and appreciate what your effort has already created.
Nine of Pentacles Reversed Meaning
You already know the LexTalk rule!
REVERSED DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN BAD.
Reversed Nine of Pentacles themes can include:
Insecurity • Dependence • Overwork • Financial imbalance • Seeking validation • Difficulty enjoying success • Questioning your worth
And this side of the card might be even more relatable.
Because sometimes we HAVE accomplished something… but it doesn’t feel good enough.
Why?
Because someone else did more.
Someone else did it faster.
Someone else has more followers.
More money.
More sales.
A bigger house.
A better job.
A bigger audience.
More recognition.
And suddenly we’re comparing our garden to someone else’s.
Reversed Message:
Your accomplishments don’t become less meaningful just because someone else has accomplished something different.
The Comparison Trap
Okay.
Let’s talk about this.
Because I think the Nine of Pentacles is the PERFECT card for the social media era.
We can open our phones and instantly see:
Someone traveling.
Someone buying a house.
Someone announcing a promotion.
Someone’s business exploding.
Someone getting thousands of views.
Someone making six figures.
Someone getting engaged.
Someone’s perfect family photos.
Someone apparently waking up at 4:30 AM, drinking celery juice, working out, meditating, running three businesses AND baking sourdough before I’ve even located my coffee.
And suddenly… our perfectly normal life feels inadequate.
But we’re comparing our entire life to tiny edited pieces of somebody else’s.
We don’t see everything it took to get there.
And they don’t see everything it took for us to get HERE.
The Nine of Pentacles asks:
What if you looked at YOUR garden instead?
What’s growing?
What did you build?
What did you survive?
What did you learn?
What can you do now that you couldn’t do before?
THAT matters.
Nine of Pentacles in Love & Relationships
Okay… Let’s talk LOVE.
The Nine of Pentacles has such an important relationship lesson.
Because being in a relationship shouldn’t require us to completely stop being an individual.
Upright in Love
Common themes can include:
Healthy independence • Confidence • Self-respect • Personal fulfillment • Maintaining individuality
For someone single, this card can be a beautiful reminder that being single isn’t some waiting room where life hasn’t started yet.
You can create a fulfilling life NOW.
For someone in a relationship, it can represent maintaining your identity while loving another person.
Your hobbies.
Your interests.
Your friendships.
Your goals.
Your personality.
YOU.
Relationship Reflection:
Am I able to be fully myself within my relationships?
I LOVE that question.
Nine of Pentacles Reversed in Love
Reversed themes might include:
Insecurity • Dependence • Seeking validation • Difficulty maintaining boundaries • Losing yourself in a relationship
And again… this doesn’t predict whether a relationship succeeds or fails.
It invites us to examine our relationship with ourselves.
Because another person’s love can be wonderful.
But it can’t completely replace our own sense of worth.
Nine of Pentacles in Career
Okay… CREATORS. ENTREPRENEURS. DREAM BUILDERS. COME HERE.
This card feels SO relevant to anyone building something.
Because building anything can become one giant cycle of:
Okay… what’s next?
You make your first sale.
Awesome!
Now you want ten.
You get ten.
Now you want fifty.
You hit 100 subscribers.
Now you want 500.
You get 500.
Now you want 1,000.
And goals are GREAT.
Goals keep us moving.
But if we constantly move the finish line… we never actually arrive anywhere.
The Nine of Pentacles can encourage us to recognize professional progress while continuing to grow.
Upright Career Themes:
Accomplishment • Independence • Expertise • Confidence • Discipline • Sustainable growth
Maybe you’re developing skills.
Maybe you’re building something of your own.
Maybe you’re becoming more independent professionally.
Maybe something that once felt impossible now feels normal.
STOP.
NOTICE THAT.
That’s growth.
Nine of Pentacles Reversed in Career
Reversed themes can include:
Burnout • Feeling undervalued • Imposter syndrome • Seeking validation • Overworking • Never feeling successful enough
Maybe you’re accomplishing things… but immediately dismissing them.
Maybe you need external recognition before you allow yourself to feel proud.
Maybe you’re working so hard toward success that you’re never actually enjoying any of it.
And that brings us to an important question:
What would success look like if nobody else could see it?

Sit with THAT one.
Nine of Pentacles & Money
Financially, this card can traditionally connect with:
Stability • Thoughtful resource management • Independence • Enjoying what you’ve earned • Building security
But again… this isn’t:
Congratulations! You’re becoming a millionaire!
Tarot isn’t guaranteeing that.
Instead, the Nine of Pentacles can encourage reflection around what financial security actually means to YOU.
Maybe it’s:
Having savings.
Paying something off.
Having less debt.
Being able to handle an emergency.
Buying something without panic.
Having more breathing room.
Building another income stream.
Feeling more in control.
Those things matter.
Money Reflection:
What does financial independence actually mean to me?
Not what social media says.
Not what someone else has.
YOU.
Success Doesn’t Always LOOK Successful
This might be my favorite lesson from today’s card.
Some of the biggest accomplishments in our lives aren’t flashy.
Maybe nobody claps.
Nobody comments.
Nobody even knows.
You set a boundary.
You left something unhealthy.
You learned a skill.
You paid something off.
You started something.
You kept going when nobody was watching.
You created something from nothing.
You became more confident.
You stopped needing someone’s approval.
You learned to enjoy your own company.
You rebuilt.
You survived.
You grew.
Those things don’t always come with trophies.
But they’re still accomplishments.
Can We Talk About the Snail Again?
Because apparently I’m emotionally attached to this snail now.
Imagine being that tiny snail.
He’s crawling through this massive vineyard.
There are giant pentacles everywhere.
A huge woman.
A falcon.
A giant estate.
And he’s just… doing his thing.
Slowly.
No panic.
No comparing himself to the falcon.
The falcon can FLY.
The snail absolutely cannot.
And yet… the snail is still moving.
Okay.
Maybe I’m giving this snail way too much personality.
But I don’t care.
Because I’m keeping this lesson:
You don’t have to move at someone else’s speed to make progress.
YES.
Put that in the journal.
Your Garden Doesn’t Have to Look Like Mine
And this connects perfectly with comparison.
Your version of success might look completely different from mine.
Maybe you want a huge career.
Maybe you don’t.
Maybe you want to travel constantly.
Maybe your dream is a peaceful home.
Maybe you want children.
Maybe you don’t.
Maybe you want to build a business.
Maybe you want to clock out at 5 PM and NEVER think about work again.
None of those are automatically better.
The Nine of Pentacles isn’t asking:
Does your life look impressive?
It’s asking:
Does the life you’re cultivating feel meaningful to YOU?
That’s a much better question.
Today’s LexTalk Tarot Journal Prompt
Grab your tarot journal!
Today’s main question is:
What have I worked hard to build that I rarely stop to appreciate?
And here’s another one I LOVE:
If I stopped comparing my progress to everyone else’s, would I feel differently about what I’ve accomplished?
A few more:
What accomplishment am I genuinely proud of?
Where have I become more independent?
What skill have I developed through practice?
What part of my life is growing slowly but steadily?
Whose success am I comparing myself to?
What does success mean to ME?
And finally:
If nobody else ever saw it, what would still make me feel successful?
That’s the one I’m sitting with.
The Tarot Deck I’m Learning With
The Nine of Pentacles is another perfect example of why studying the actual tarot artwork is helping me SO much.
Instead of memorizing:
Nine of Pentacles = Independence and accomplishment.
I can look at the card and remember:
Woman = Independence
Grapes = Fruits of your labor
Pentacles = Tangible accomplishments
Falcon = Discipline
Snail = Slow progress
Estate = Stability
And suddenly… the card tells a STORY.
Throughout LexTalk Tarot, I’m using a physical Rider-Waite-Smith style tarot deck because I want to study the traditional imagery while working through all 78 cards.

Learning Tarot With a Journal
I’m also writing down my own memory tricks as I go because apparently… “Remember the tiny snail.” works much better for my brain than memorizing three paragraphs from a guidebook.
If you’re learning tarot alongside me, any notebook works perfectly.
But if you’d like a dedicated place for tarot meanings, symbolism, personal interpretations, and reflection prompts, you can [check out the tarot journal I recommend here — paid link].

TWENTY Cards Into LexTalk Tarot!
Okay…
THIS feels like a milestone!
We’ve officially explored:
20 OF 78 TAROT CARDS!

And considering the entire reason I started this series was because 78 cards felt like SO MUCH to learn… twenty feels pretty freaking exciting.
And maybe that’s actually the PERFECT lesson for today’s card.
We’re not finished.
Not even close.
There are still 58 cards to learn.
But, that doesn’t erase the twenty we’ve already studied.

SEE?!
Nine of Pentacles lesson happening in real time.
We can be proud of twenty… and still be excited about twenty-one.
Both can exist.
One Last LexTalk Thought
I think the Nine of Pentacles might be one of the cards I needed to learn.
Because I’m very good at thinking about:
What’s next?
What’s the next goal?
The next idea?
The next thing to improve?
The next milestone?
And there’s nothing wrong with wanting more.
Ambition can be wonderful.
Dreams are wonderful.
Growth is wonderful.
But I don’t want to spend my entire life chasing the next thing… only to realize I never appreciated any of the things I actually reached.
Maybe success isn’t one giant finish line.
Maybe it’s a garden.
Something we keep cultivating.
Some things grow quickly.
Some take forever.
Some don’t grow the way we expected.
Some need to be replanted.
And occasionally… we should probably stop working long enough to look around and say:
Wow.
Look at what’s growing.
Not because we’re finished.
Not because everything is perfect.
Not because we suddenly have everything we want.
But because the person standing here today has already done things the person who started couldn’t do yet.
And that deserves recognition.
So, keep building.
Keep dreaming.
Keep setting ridiculous goals.
Keep learning.
Keep creating.
Keep planting things.
But every once in a while…
look around your garden.
And give yourself credit for what’s already there.
And if progress feels painfully slow?
Remember our tiny little friend at the bottom of the card.
He’s still moving.
And so are you.
Nine of Pentacles = Appreciate the life you’re building, one accomplishment at a time.
One card. One lesson. One little bit of magic at a time.
