Have you ever heard a song for the very first time and felt like it was speaking directly to something inside you?
Not necessarily because of the lyrics, but because of the way it made you feel?
For me, that song was “Parasite Eve” by Bring Me The Horizon.
And to explain why, I have to take you back to 2020.
2020: A Year I Was Just Trying to Survive
I think we can all agree that 2020 was a strange, terrifying, and emotionally exhausting year.
COVID had changed everything. I was working from home, trying to adjust to a world that suddenly felt completely unfamiliar.
But for me, there was something much harder happening.
My mom had just died.
I was grieving, trying to function, and somehow expected to continue with everyday life as though my entire world hadn’t just been turned upside down.
I remember sitting at my computer, trying to get through my workday without becoming a blubbering mess.
Some days, that felt almost impossible.
I’ve always loved listening to music while I work. Sometimes I’ll put YouTube on in the background because I enjoy watching music videos, too. Some artists create videos that are practically little movies, and I love that creativity.
So, on this particular day, I had YouTube playing while I worked.
And that’s when it happened.
The First Time I Heard Bring Me The Horizon
A song came on that I’d never heard before.
“Parasite Eve.”
I’d never listened to Bring Me The Horizon before. I didn’t know much about the band, their music, or their lead singer, Oli Sykes.
But something about that song immediately caught my attention.
It was intense.
It was angry.
It was sad.
It was chaotic.
And somehow, it was exactly what I needed.
Because that’s how I felt.
I was angry. I was heartbroken. I was lost. I was trying to make sense of a world that suddenly didn’t feel fair anymore.
And here was this song that seemed to capture so many of those emotions all at once.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
The sound, the energy, the emotion. It just stuck with me.
I listened to it again.
And again.
And before I knew it, I’d fallen down the Bring Me The Horizon rabbit hole.
When Music Becomes More Than Music
I don’t think people always realize how powerful music can be.
Sometimes we listen to songs because they’re catchy. Sometimes because they remind us of someone or somewhere.
And sometimes, a song finds us during the darkest chapter of our lives and becomes something much bigger.
That’s what Bring Me The Horizon became for me.
I started discovering more of their music, and I became absolutely obsessed.
Their music gave me somewhere to put emotions I didn’t always know how to express.
When I was sad, I could listen.
When I was angry, I could turn it up.
When I felt completely lost, their music made me feel a little less alone.
Bring Me The Horizon helped me survive one of the darkest periods of my life.
I don’t mean that a song magically fixed my grief.
Nothing could bring my mom back.
But music gave me something to hold on to while I learned how to live with that loss.
And sometimes, that’s everything.
From My Computer Screen to Five Feet Away
Now here’s where this story comes full circle.
A few years ago, for my birthday, Tony surprised me with tickets to see Bring Me The Horizon LIVE!
And let me tell you…
IT. WAS. INCREDIBLE.
There’s something almost indescribable about seeing a band live when their music means that much to you.
It’s not just a concert anymore.
It’s personal.
And as if seeing them perform wasn’t already amazing enough, Oli Sykes actually came walking through the crowd while singing!
He passed less than FIVE FEET away from us!
FIVE FEET!
The same voice I’d discovered through YouTube while sitting at my computer, grieving my mom and trying not to fall apart, was suddenly right there in front of me.
I couldn’t believe it.
I was absolutely blown away.
And in that moment, I couldn’t help but think about how far I’d come.
From sitting alone at home in 2020, feeling lost and heartbroken, to standing beside my husband, watching a band that had helped carry me through those difficult days.
Talk about a full-circle moment.
The Song That Changed My Life
If someone had told me back in 2020 that a random song playing on YouTube would eventually become such a meaningful part of my life, I probably wouldn’t have believed them.
But that’s the beautiful thing about music.
You never know when a song is going to find you.
You never know which artist will become the soundtrack to an entire chapter of your life.
And you certainly never know when something as simple as pressing play will lead to a memory you’ll cherish forever.
For me, “Parasite Eve” will always be more than just a Bring Me The Horizon song.
It reminds me of grief, survival, anger, healing, and eventually, happiness.
It reminds me of who I was in 2020 and how much I’ve experienced since then.
And it reminds me that even during the darkest moments, something beautiful can still find its way into your life.
Sometimes music doesn’t change your circumstances. It changes how you get through them.
And for that, I’ll always be grateful to Bring Me The Horizon.
Thank you for being there when I needed something to hold on to.
Now I’m curious: Has a song ever found you during a difficult time and stayed with you ever since? What song was it, and why does it mean so much to you?
I’d love to hear your story in the comments.
